The Beginnings

Welcome to our blog!

Meet the main character, Felicia: an amazing 12 year old with a personality all her own - full of passion, independence, and spunk!

Felicia and her dog, Griffin

And meet her mom, Charlene: an ordinary mom who works, does mom-type-chores, and has fun with Felicia!

This blog is meant to be a written documentary of the fun things that happen as Felicia and I embark on a new challenge - Felicia attending her dream school (and our commuting there and back each day).

Before we get started writing about new adventures, there is something you should know about Felicia. She LOVES horses. That may be an understatement. She lives, breathes, dreams about and wants to own all horses! There, that's more like it. She's had this passion since she was little. I'm probably the one girl who never wanted a pony growing up, but when I saw how passionate Felicia was about them (she learned all about riding by reading books when she was too young to take lessons) I signed her up for lessons as soon as I could.

Another thing you should know is that Felicia and I have always been a team. Despite being a young mom, when Felicia was born I stayed home with her for the first 5 months (while taking college classes) and then I found a daycare she could attend and I could work with her. When she was three, we found an amazing home daycare that was run by a woman trained by Maria Montessori herself, and I was able to work there as well. When she was 5 and started kindergarten, I found a YMCA daycare where I worked mother's hours and was home for her every day and in the summer she came to camp with me in the summer. A few years later I was able to run a YMCA horseback riding camp and Felicia was able to receive horseback riding camp all summer long for two summers! Along the way, while working, I had finished my bachelor's degree in education and started and finished master's degree in social work. Eventually I was able to begin working as a school social worker and had the same time off (including summers) with Felicia. There have been bumps in the road, but we have also had some incredible luck and amazing supportive people that have helped us along the way. We hope that this luck and support will continue as we travel along new roads!

Here are some pictures of Felicia and I throughout the years - walk with us down memory lane!

Lastly, I have been a single mom from the beginning but as of November 2011 I have been dating an incredible, wonderful man, Kaleb, and his super-awesome son, Kamen. With them we have had many fun adventures, lots of laughs, and incredible shared experiences. We are super lucky to have them in our lives. More on them to come!

We invite you on a journey where you learn about the steps that led to Felicia's decision to attend a private school, her adventures while there, and everything in between. Let the next chapters begin!
